Carol volunteered to model for me while I did a few lighting experiments with hard light. This shot is a film noir look with a gridded light. I wanted a dark shadowy look. Stuff like this is a bit tricky to get the shadows right with the small strobes. I may do more experimentation with a studio strobe with a modeling light. Carol volunteered to model for me while I did a few lighting experiments with hard light. There were a couple of things I wanted to accomplish with this shot. First, I was shooting with my "minimal strobist" kit. This consists of my Fuji X100, a couple of flashes and stands, and Rogue Flashbender modifiers. I'll write more about that sometime soon on my blog after a few more model sessions. Second, I purposely shot in a relatively mundane location - the loading docks behind my office. I'll be doing more shots like this in the future, looking for ways to be creative in ordinary surroundings. Carol volunteered to model for me while I did a few lighting experiments. She really wanted to try some jump shots in front of the white seamless so we worked on a few of those. She had a blast doing these! This is one of my favorites. I'm growing rather fond of B&W white seamless shots, especially with models moving or jumping around.
