Hockey season just started and wouldn't you know it, my main lens started acting up! The manual focus was jamming up and the front of the barrel housing had loosened up on my beloved Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L II. That can't be good. I'm sure that had nothing at all to do with the fact that I'm a klutz who manages to bang expensive lenses into things while dodging fast moving players, sticks, and pucks. If not for religiously attaching my lens hood...well, let's just say there can be some close calls when you are after shots like the above image.
I was prepared to pay a repair bill when I sent my lens in for rush repair to Canon Professional Services during a rare break of almost 2 weeks in the team's home schedule. My gold level account guarantees me a 3 day turnaround on repairs so I sent my lens in with 2 day shipping. Canon emailed within a couple hours of delivery and said that it looked like the repair would be covered under warranty and that they'd get right on it. That was a Wednesday afternoon and by Friday morning I got another message with an overnight tracking number with no cost to me for the return shipping! I had to wait the weekend for standard overnight but this morning (Monday) my lens is back in my hands. It appears to be working fine and looking like new, ready to go back into service at this weekend's games!
Canon Professional Services - totally worth it. The gold membership plan might seem a little pricey at first at $100 a year. The speed of repair and the fact that my equipment was shipped back overnight for free made the membership a bargain. When you depend your equipment for your photography, it's nice to know that you can depend on the manufacturer to keep you up and running. Thanks, CPS!
